Focus Room Big Sign
Make text as big as the screen allows: a sign as SVG, PNG and printable PDF.
How it works
Fits your text — a word, a sentence or a few lines — into a full-screen sign: the largest font size at which it still fits with a margin, measured with the real Noto font metrics (Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Devanagari and common Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters). You get an SVG with the letters as outlines, a PNG for a TV, tablet or video call, an A4 landscape PDF to print and a link that opens the sign full screen in Focus Room, where it can also scroll as a marquee.
- The text is shaped with the Noto fonts (Lumina’s OpenType shaper: Arabic joining, Devanagari reordering, kerning) and measured exactly. A binary search finds the largest font size at which the greedy word wrap fits inside the picture minus a 6 % margin, with a line height of 1.18 em and at most 8 lines; your own line breaks are kept.
- The SVG contains the glyph outlines as paths (quadratic TrueType curves), so it looks the same on any device. The PNG is drawn by Printshop’s scanline rasteriser (non-zero winding, four sub-scanlines) and the PDF is a vector file with the font embedded as a subset — both from the same display list.
- Each colour pair has a contrast ratio of at least 7:1.

How to use the Focus Room Big Sign
Make text as big as the screen allows and download it as PNG, SVG and printable PDF, or open it full screen with a link.
What it is for
Sometimes you just need a few words, very big: "Back in 10 minutes" on a shop door, "Quiet please — recording" outside a studio, "Gate B" on a tablet held up at the airport, a welcome on the TV in the window. This tool finds the largest font size at which your text still fits the picture with a margin, wraps long lines at spaces, and gives you three files: a PNG for screens, an SVG whose letters are outlines (it looks the same everywhere) and an A4 landscape PDF to print.
It also returns a link that opens the sign full screen in Focus Room, where it can scroll as a marquee. The whole sign — text, colours and marquee — lives in that link; nothing is stored on a server.
Worked example
Text "Quiet please — recording", colours White on red, size Full HD landscape (1920 × 1080 px). The tool reports:
- 2 lines at 304.33 px on a 1920 × 1080 px sign: "Quiet please —" and "recording".
- A PNG of about 120 KB, an SVG of about 11 KB with outlined letters and a PDF of about 6 KB.
- A link to open the sign in Focus Room.
Why two lines? On one line the text would have to shrink to fit the width; split at the space after the dash, both lines can be much larger while still fitting the height.
How to read the result
- Font size is the em size in pixels of the picture. Capital letters are roughly 70 % of it.
- Lines shows how the text was wrapped. Your own line breaks are always kept; the tool only adds breaks at spaces.
- The margin is 6 % of the shorter side on every edge, so nothing touches the bezel of a TV.
- The PDF is fitted again for an A4 sheet in landscape, so its line breaks can differ from the PNG.
- A warning appears when characters are missing from the bundled fonts or when the text is too long to fit eight lines.
Tips and common mistakes
- Short beats long: three or four words read from across a room, a sentence does not.
- Put a line break where the meaning splits ("Back in" / "10 minutes") instead of letting the wrap decide.
- Black on signal yellow and White on red draw attention; White on night blue is calm for a TV that stays on.
- For a phone held upright choose Phone portrait; words then wrap onto more, shorter lines.
- The marquee option only affects the link: the files always show the fitted, still sign.
- Arabic, Hindi, Cyrillic and Greek are shaped correctly. Chinese, Japanese and Korean work for common characters; rare ones and emoji are not in the bundled fonts.
FAQ
Why are the letters paths in the SVG?
So the sign looks exactly the same on every device, even without the Noto fonts installed. The text is still in the SVG's title for screen readers.
Can I change the font?
No. The signs use Noto Sans, which covers the scripts of all 17 site languages and is free to use (SIL Open Font License).
What does the link store?
Only the text, the colours and the marquee setting, encoded after #sign= in the address. The part after # is never sent to a server.
How do I show the sign on a TV?
Open the link on the device connected to the TV and press Full screen in Focus Room's Display tab. Press Esc to leave.
